The Importance of the Genuine Backlink

Due to the constant changes in the algorithms of Google Search Engines the importance of having a Genuine Backlink has grown significantly in the recent past. Now more than ever the building of quality backlinks has come to the forefront of SEO.
A relevant and quality backlink is one from a site that has content directly related to the content of your site. After all the purpose of the Search Engine is to help people find what they are looking for, so relevancy is of high importance to Google. After all as you will easily be able to confirm by using Free tools such as SEO
Quake, it is not the site with the most backlinks that is ranked the highest, but the one with the best quality relevant backlinks.
The backlink itself may seem like it is some mysterious thing from the virtual world of SEO, but all it really is, is a link to your site sitting on a page on someone elses site. This could be on a forum by being embedded in your signature link, where you've made a comment on a post, on a social bookmark site such as Twitter or Facebook, or even on someone elses actual website where they have copied something from your site and given you proper credit by linking to you in reference.
The latter of the examples above is the best type of Backling you can have, as there was no incentive for the other party to give it, other than the fact that you have made quality content that they wish to pass on to others for free.
You can of course deliberately make your content appealing to people and coerce them into copying it, this practice is called linkbaiting, and can bring you a lot of traffic extremely quickly if you have something worth passing on, such as a funny video of a cat playing the piano (viewed about a million times apparently) which appeals to the masses and takes off virally.
You can also approach sites of a similar nature to yours, and offer to linkswap. If they will link to your site in exchange for you linking to theirs. This is normally mutually beneficial and looked on favourably by both parties, unless of course you are already number one, and the request is from your nearest competition.
And finally there is what I believe to be the most overlooked and underrated way to get quality backlinks. Posting Articles to online article directories. I am aware that it is a lot more effort than paying for backlinks, but a well written a thought provoking article could go on providing backlinks for months and even years into the future. I know of a few online marketers with a passion for writing who use this as their sole method of website promotion and do very well from it too.
The choice of how to get them is yours, but if you have a website you will need quality backlinks to get it ranked, fact.
